So many years of sharing secrets, swapping baby clothes, and laughing till we cried. We moved away, and wouldn't be in contact for months or even a few years. But as soon as that phone rang, it was like we had never been apart.
Betty had a gift for friendship -- she held nothing back, and loved everyone (well, almost everyone). I think of her every day, remembering that new tall girl in the Avondale playground, who dressed a little differently, wore her hair a little differently, and yet who walked boldly up to me, with a disarming smile, cocked her head and said, "Hi! I'm Betty. Want to be my friend?" How's that for 5th grade social skills? To this shy introvert, it was a miracle, and we were friends every after. She was so very special, and I carry her with me every day.
